GREGORIO DEL PILAR

Born: November 14, 1875
Died: December 2, 1899

Gregorio del Pilar often received booklets written by Dr. Rizal and others from his uncle Marcelo H. del Pilar. He hid these booklets but sometimes give copies of the booklets to his closest friends. At 24, he was the youngest general in the Revolutionary Army and fought bravely against the Americans with only 60 men. He was killed at Tirad Pass, a high narrow pass where both Filipino and American troops had to pass to reach Aguinaldo's camp. Gregorio del Pilar got there first and defended the pass so well, the Americans almost turned back until a native showed them a secret path to the top of the pass. Gregorio del Pilar and his 60 men were taken by surprise and all were killed. Gregorio del Pilar is remembered as the Hero of Tirad Pass and to the Americans as an Officer and a Gentleman. Before his death he wrote "I am surrounded by fearful odds that will overcome me and my gallant men, but I am pleased to die fighting for my beloved country." Tirad Pass has been declared a national shrine.
