MACARIO SAKAY


Born: 1870
Died: September 13, 1907

Sakay started of as a barber in Manila and became an early member of Bonifacio's Katipunan. An active participant in the revolutions against both Spain and the US. Captured in 1901, and later set free, he continued to oppose US sovereignty. In 1902, Sakay became the head of the Republic of Katagalugan, a revolutionary organisation aimed at reviving the spirit of the original Katipunan. In 1905, intensified military operations resulted in the capture of many leaders of Sakay's republic. After the Americans offered him some reform, he surrendered in July 1906. Sakay was betrayed and later tried and executed by the Americans.
